At St. Mary Preschool, we engage students in their faith, intellect, and community so they are ready for kingergarten and beyond. We use the following skills to determine a child's kindergarden readiness: math, reading, social, fine motor, large motor, self-help, technology, and religion.
Math skills include number recognizing, sequencing, patterns, number words, spatial relationships, concept of time, measurements, rhythms, ability to reason, and the ability to predict and problem solve through science experiments.
Reading skills include alphabet recognition, phonological awareness, word recognition, vocabulary through story time & activities, Get Set For School curriculum, writing without tears.
Social skills include self-regulation skills, social-emotional awareness, learning to work with others, following directions, sharing, manners, listening skills & taking turns, we use Conscious Discipline program for social/emotional development.
Fine motor skills include using scissors, writing, art, learning activities, sensory tables (sand, play-doh, corn, water play, & more), finger plays, crafts, and felt board stories.
Large motor skills include activities in gym class, outdoor playground, movement to music, games, rhythm sticks, bean bag, parachute activities, group activities, and obstacle courses.
Self-help skills include cleaning up after snack and play; taking care of coat, backpack, folder and lunch; learning to button, zip, snap and tie; participate in classroom jobs.
Technology skills include learning basic computer skills and terminology with academic games and iPad learning.
Religion includes daily prayers, weekly Bible lessons, songs, crafts, monthly virtue, field trips, and other activities.
